Master chefs cook with high steaks

The annual MasterChef competition was on Jan. 25 with junior Tyler Hurley, sophomore Sean Rodriguez, and freshmen Vania Kamaraju and Cindy Li competing for the title and prize of cooking utensils. The student chefs prepared appetizers, entrees, and desserts across three rounds for the panel of judges. After hours of fresh aromas and delicious cooking filling the kitchens, Rodriguez was announced winner.

Clockwise from top: (1) Rodriguez adds the finishing touches to his entree of pork bulgogi and rice. He refined it so the gochujang sauce and gochugaru pepper brought out mouthwatering spice. (2) Kamaraju plates red pasta with broccolini for her entree. She said she paid extra attention to the sauce of what she considers one of her favorite dishes. (3) The panel of judges, (from left to right) AP Biology teacher Tyler Richman, Global Studies teacher Benjamin Andersen, and assistant principal Azine Davoudzadeh, enjoy a main dish. (4) Hurley spreads a glaze on his Italian-themed garlic bread, seasoned with prosciutto, rosemary and Parmesan cheese. (5) Hurley brushes on a layer of sugar onto the creamy base of his tiramisu for the dessert round. His cooking journey has been inspired by TV shows and his mom. He said he’s looking to take his skills up to a career.
