It’s been a crazy year for comedian John Mulaney
Rehab, divorce, pregnancy and more give Mulaney a rollercoaster of a time
John Mulaney’s relevance in the news lately has been evident, with his name stretching headlines of articles and websites for what seems like longer than a year.
You may have seen his standup specials on Netflix, his appearances on SNL, or even heard his voice in shows like “Big Mouth” and movies like “Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse”.
Junior Anika Passi says Mulaney’s personality is of someone who truly enjoys making people laugh.
“You can tell this through his stage presence, he always seems connected to his audience,” Passi said.
But the latest press about him isn’t for the greatest reasons. Quite contradictory to his cheery demeanor, Mulaney has found himself at the center of much drama and criticism.
Mulaney and his ex-wife, Anna Marie Tendler, were a duo loved by many. He constantly referenced her in his standup performances, often giving her his praise and appreciation. They met in 2010 and both wrote about that night on their website in the third person, writing “They were not dating at the time, but Anna knew they would soon be after.”
Their love story continued when they were married by a friend of theirs, comedian and actor Dan Levy, in July of 2014. The two often showed each other off on their social engagements and shared the exciting announcement that they were working together on Mulaney’s Broadway show, “Oh, Hello”, which ran for 138 performances from 2016-2017.
Tendler, who traveled with the cast, described the experience as “the most rewarding thing that I did in makeup in my entire makeup career.”
The pair and their beloved dog Petunia seemed like the perfect entertainment power couple.
Thousands of people’s hearts were broken when it was announced in December of 2020 that Mulaney would be returning to rehab for the second time. After 15 years of sobriety, he personally checked himself back in because of alcoholism and cocaine addiction. He stayed for 60 days in a treatment center in Pennsylvania.
“I think that he’s responsible for checking himself into rehab,” said junior Zareena Mann, who had heard of Mulaney recently. “Recovering from addiction is a rocky road and it’s good he’s self aware.”
Tendler noticeably unfollowed him and deleted all her social media accounts prior to his time spent in rehab.
It was in May that after six years of marriage, Tendler revealed her divorce from Mulaney.
“I am heartbroken that John has decided to end our marriage,” she said in an announcement. “I wish him support and success as he continues his recovery.”
“I feel bad for Anna and him and how the divorce was so publicized,” said junior Tarini Raj, a fan of Mulaney.
In June, the same month their divorce was publicized, Mulaney’s relationship with actress Olivia Munn was confirmed.
As quickly as this hit fans, so did the rumors of a pregnancy with Munn.
Mulaney himself spoke on his rollercoaster of a year in an interview a few months back on “Late Night With Seth Meyers”.
“I went to rehab in September, I got out in October, I moved out of my home from my ex-wife, I host ‘Saturday Night Live’ on Halloween, I relapse after the show,” he said. “I’m told I took a job here… then I continued using drugs… I went to rehab again, this time for two months. I got out in February, I lived in sober living for another month and a half, then in the spring I went to Los Angeles.”
He continues his recap by mentioning this is where he met and began to date Munn. Dating Munn right after recovery he jokes is a “reverse catch”, but expresses his gratitude toward her and her understanding of nature during the rough times he’s going through.
He confirmed the rumors that he and Munn are having a baby together.
“ I found the pregnancy with Olivia a little unexpected since he was in a marriage for a long time, but I think a child would be great for him!” Passi said. “I think he would be a great dad and having a child could help him strong through recovery.”
In July, Mulaney announced the dates for“John Mulaney: From Scratch”, his first live tour since rehab. This surprised everyone, as it came with no further notice. This tour first began in Boston in August and traveled to several states in the United States. His most current show took place in New Orleans on Nov. 4 to a sold-out crowd. All of his upcoming dates are sold out.
