Multiple actors accused of sexual assault
Many men and women have recently come forward with accusations of sexual assault against household names in the entertainment industry.
These Hollywood players have created art that will live on forever whether people choose to continue watching or choose to protest the behavior of the men and women accused.
While accusation of sexual assault has been in the entertainment industry for years, it wasn’t rampant until recently when big time executive Harvey Weinstein was accused of sexual misconduct by multiple women.
Weinstein has produced many iconic independent films and hits such as “Pulp Fiction,” “Shakespeare with Love” and “Gangs of New York” that will enjoyed for generations. The news of his offenses have struck many.
“I will continue to watch these movies and shows if they are really good,” said freshman Rose Shah, “but I won’t be openly giving my money out to them because of the acts they’ve committed.”
These sudden accusations started a movement that has helped more women and men come forward and speak out about sexual assault.
But some fans will eventually come back to watch these entertainers’ work.
As early as December, more than 30 high profile people in Hollywood and other professions have been accused of sexual abuse from multiple people.
“No it doesn’t surprise me,” said senior Asha Ray Chaudhuri. “There is a growing number of women coming forward daily.”
One of the more recent allegations is against one of Walt Disney’s most important executives, John Lasseter, who is known for his work on Pixar movies such as “Toy Story” and “Cars.” He will not be fired for his actions, but will instead take a six month paid leave of absence.
Lasseter was spared by Disney, but most of the entertainers who have been accused of sexual harassment have been removed from shows and movies, as well as being fired from broadcasting networks.
One example is the comedian Louis C.K, who has been dropped from shows and comedy specials on Fox, Netflix, and HBO. His style at comedy revolves around many dirty jokes which may make it harder for people to continue viewing his work knowing what he’s done.
Another prominent actor who has been accused of many offenses of sexual assault is Kevin Spacey. News of his offends created a massive uproar online.
Spacey has been suspended from the popular and award winning Netflix show “House of Cards” and dropped from any future projects. “House of Cards” will continue without him.
“‘House of Cards’ wouldn’t be the same without Kevin Spacey as he drives the show,” said senior Joaquin Gonzalez
The industry has taken a step forward by kicking these people out and showing that money and social status cannot stop women and men from coming forward about incidents of sexual harassment and assault.
“The industry can shed more light on these situations by finding a better way for people to share their experiences,”said choir teacher Nick Patton.
While the entertainers are ostracized from the industry, the art they have created will still be held in people’s hearts, making it harder for some people to completely stop watching a person’s catalog of work.
After hearing what these men have been accused of, many students believe the films and shows they’ve been part of can still be enjoyed by those who that can look past the accusations.
Junior Antinuk Bandele said she would probably continue to watch shows and films by these actors because the art can still be enjoyed.
She said watching these films and shows helps raise awareness of what some actors have been accused of recently.
“If you don’t watch these actors work and talk about it we are ignoring it,”said Patton.
Classic films and shows will always be there whether the actors and entertainers in them are accused of sexual harassment.
But the entertainment industry has taken a big step forward by stopping them from making projects and condemning them.
