The red carpet rolls out for these upcoming movies
The curtains have fallen on 2016, and Hollywood is ready to bring their game for 2017. The Silver Screen better be ready because these films are bound to be box office hits.
“Wonder Woman”
The next installment in the DC franchise is the first female superhero movie in 12 years. Starring actress Gal Gadot, “Wonder Women” is set in 1910s World War 1 England. Her co-star, the infamous Chris Pine will be portraying Steve Trevor, a long time Wonder Woman comic book character. The main focus of the story is after soldier Steve Trevor washes up on a mysterious island, he finds himself amongst a tribe of all women warriors, one of which is the legendary Wonder Woman. She goes back with Trevor and he convinces her to help them in World War 1.
Many fans are curious to see how DC tackles a woman superhero.
“I think the new ‘Wonder Woman’ movie will be a wonderful attribution to the DC franchise,” said senior Zade Kal.
In 2005 Marvel tried their hand with “Elektra” which was met with horrid reviews. There’s already speculation gaining that “Wonder Woman” will meet the same fate.
“I’m very disappointed in what I saw, and it seems like all the problems are the same problems, it’s discombobulated, it doesn’t have narrative flow,” said a DC insider to the Inquisitr. “It’s just very disjointed.”
“Wonder Woman” is set to release June 2.
“Spider-Man: Homecoming”
Marvel brings us “Spider-Man: Homecoming”, the third attempt at the Spider-Man franchise. Starring the fresh faced Tom Holland, the film plot is set after “Captain America: Civil War”. It entails Peter Parker’s struggles with his new hero status after fighting alongside Tony Stark Inc.
Fans were ecstatic when Holland was first introduced as the web-spinning vigilante, happy to finally see a teenage actor playing a high school student. Holland brings the perfect balance of cool and nerdy, making the complete Spidey package.
“I’m really excited because the cast is really diverse and Tom Holland will be the youngest person to portray Spider-man, which is way more accurate to the comics,” said Sophie Bacher.
“Spider-Man: Homecoming” hasn’t gotten as much press as other Marvel heavy weights like “Iron Man” and “Captain America”, but things are looking bright, enough even to wash away the image of 2007s finger-snapping Spider-Man (played by Tobey Maguire) from our delicate minds.
“Spider-Man: Homecoming” is set to release July 7.
“Baywatch”
Modeled after the television series, Paramount brings us reboot of “Baywatch” in movie form on May 26. “Baywatch” was originally a soap opera known to be rather ridiculous. The plot usually featured lifeguards getting messed up in cliche situations, and everything from slow motion running across beaches to arms dealers. The cast includes stars Zac Efron and Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson.
This summer comedy will bring us everything fans loved about the original series, from water ski chases to running across the beach in matching red swimsuits.
“Baywatch”(2017) has a fairly simple plot, which include lifeguard Mitch (Johnson), and new recruit Matt (Efron), who go on an action filled mission after discovering a dilemma that threatens the legacy of the bay.
“It looks stupid and funny,” said senior Noelle Pipp. “Twos things I look for in a comedy.”
This most definitely won’t be an intense movie, but will be fantastic for a quick laugh. There’s even rumors of a David Hasselhoff cameo. It’ll be entertaining to see Hasselhoff kicking up sand again.
“Beauty and the Beast”
Our favorite childhood tale has come back to the silver screen. Disney has brought us another live-action rendition of one of their most famous animated movies, “Beauty and the Beast”.
Giving fresh performances in the re-telling of this classic masterpiece, Emma Watson and Dan Stevens star as Belle and the Beast.
Rumors of this film have been floating around for years and fans are delighted to have the release date only a month away.
Disney has brought us multiple live action remakes such as “Cinderella”(2015) and the smash hit “The Jungle Book”(2016).
“I believe Emma Watson suits the role perfectly and really bring to life Belle’s classic character,” said sophomore Mai Weber.
The anticipation to see what Disney has made of the fairy tale is boiling over, especially with the new CGI coming our way.
“The Jungle Book” (2016) has set a high standard for animation in movies, with gorgeous life-like scenery and animals. We’ll have to wait and see how “Beauty and the Beast” matches in comparison.
Ever just the same, ever a surprise “Beauty and the Beast” is set to release March 17.
“Dunkirk”
War. What is it good for? “Dunkirk” is the gritty truth of battle and will released on July 21. Set during World War 2, the historic events of “Dunkirk” include British forces setting off on a mission to save and evacuate their allied French troops for Dunkirk, France.
Director Christopher Nolan brings back Thomas Hardy and Cillian Murphy to star in this fantastic war tale. Former “One Direction” member Harry Styles will make his acting debut in this film.
“Personally I feel that Harry Styles wouldn’t be that good of an actor, but he has the looks to sell it,” said sophomore Malika Mohan.
There isn’t much to be known about the characters as of yet. The trailers are very bleak and do not give a lot away, just like ones of most Christopher Nolan films.
The film will be released on July 21, 2017.
“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales”
Yo ho, a pirates film for me. “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” brings us back to the world of swashbuckling pirates. Johnny Depp reprises his role as Captain Jack Sparrow, only this time the Captain is down on his luck and an old friend is in search of him.
The mysterious ghost pirate Captain Salazar is on the hunt for Sparrow and is set on killing every last pirate. Sparrow’s only hope is to find Poseidon’s trident, to have full command over the sea.
Even Orlando Bloom is told to be coming back, playing the handsome Will Turner.
“I’m really excited for it! I liked the first four movies a lot, and I’m glad this one looks just as fun as the others,” said senior Ash Sindhu.
Pirates of the Caribbean were once celebrated films, even getting nominated for several oscars. But, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” broke this streak with no nominations. Some fans of the franchise even called it a quick money grab for Disney.
“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” is set to release May 26.
2016 had some serious flops, but the major hype surrounding this year’s film additions has regained hope of reviewers everywhere. With groundbreaking films to come, 2017 is going to be a stellar year for movie lovers.
