Who will win the golden glory at next Oscars?
Oscar season is upon us, and this year there are plenty of movies to add to your must-see list.
The next few months will be a whirlwind of nomination announcements and award shows. Fans and critics are already making predictions about movie nominations.
The most recent movie that has been grabbing everyone’s attention is “Sully.” Critics have been raving about Clint Eastwood’s job of directing this movie, which follows the story of Danville pilot Chelsey Sullenberger, who landed his plane in the Hudson River.
“[Eastwood] is very good at his job. He has a talent that gives the movie its tension along with its autobiographical sheen,” wrote the New York Times. “He is presumed to be a nominee for best director.
Last year’s Oscars caused an uproar from many fans, who pointed out that the majority of nominees were white actors and actresses, which reflected the lack of diversity in Hollywood in general.
While the majority of this year’s anticipated nominees are still white, some people of color expected to be nominated.
“Loving,” starring Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton, (released Nov. 4) tells the story of an interracial Virginia couple who get arrested for being married in the 1960s.
Edgerton and Negga have received a lot of praise for their work in this film.
“Nichols tells the Lovings’ story in a way that feels immediate and modern, and not just like a history lesson,” Variety wrote about the film’s director Jeff Nichols. The magazine expects both actors and Nichols to be nominated.
“Manchester by the Sea” (released Nov. 18) is about a man, played by Casey Affleck, who has to move back to his hometown and take over guardianship of his nephew after his brother’s death. People expect Affleck’s nomination for his performance in this movie
“Fences” (released in December) stars Denzel Washington and Viola Davis. Although it is only beginning to get buzz, critics are anticipating nominations for the stars in this film. They think Washington will be nominated for his leading role as a former professional baseball player dealing with tension in his family.
“La La Land”, a romance starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, should be a top contender for nominations. Though it is yet to come out, moviegoers are anxiously awaiting the release of this critically acclaimed film about two artists struggling to achieve their dreams while falling in love.
A comedy about three women living in 1970s Southern California, “20th Century Women” has been highly acclaimed by critics. It stars Elle Fanning, Annette Bening, and Greta Gerwig. Receiving a 94 percent “certified fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes, it should be considered as a candidate for Best Picture.
Fans will have to wait until Jan. 24 to see the nominations and Feb. 26 for the Oscars to see who takes home the gold.
