‘Sully’ features local hero pilot
A pilot from the neighboring town of Danville being played by Tom Hanks in a Warner Bros production?
Yes this is real, and the movie, “Sully,” is in theaters now.
Directed by Clint Eastwood, “Sully” tells the shocking real-life story of the water landing of flight 1549 on the Hudson River after geese flew into both engines better known as “The Miracle on the Hudson.”
Danville pilot Chesley Sullenberger landed the plane nearly eight years ago, and all 155 passengers on board lived to tell the tale.
Hanks stars as Sullenberger, nicknamed “Sully,” in the tear jerking drama that recounts the famous landing and the repercussions of the event.
The film differs from the traditional movie structure, as it starts after the main point of action: the plane has already landed.
Viewers are shown the effects of the event, which include the stress Sully experienced dealing with the intense praise from the public and the media.
There is also an ongoing disagreement involving Sully and his first officer Jeffrey Skiles (Aaron Eckhart) against the National Transportation Safety Board, which argues the two men could have landed flight 1549 in a less risky way after both engines went out. This tugs especially on Sully, who has just saved 155 lives but is still questioned for his decision-making. While this is happening, he is drowning in his fame, and getting approached by strangers who commend him for his heroic actions.
Suspense builds and the plot gets very emotional once the film recounts Jan 15, 2009, the day of the water landing. This is easily the highlight of the film.
There is a feeling of desperation dispersed among the people after the engines stop. People start praying, and eventually saying their last goodbyes.
Eastwood brings back the passengers he has previously introduced, and shows themstruggling in the film. After the plane lands, Eastwood shows the franticness amongst passengers, demonstrated by the two unnamed sons and their father when they can’t find each other.
“Sully”shows that even heroes like Sully can experience injustice from others
The crash scene left a mark and made the audience receive faith in humanity, seeing people of all different ages helping each other was truly remarkable.
Unforutnately, some scenes were slow compared to the crash and were not as renown. I give “Sully” 4 out of 5 Grizzles paws.
