Summer blockbusters take on the silverscreen
With summer right around the corner, movie companies are gearing up for the biggest and best movies of the year. These movies that should be at the top of anyone’s list to see this summer, regardless of preferred genre.
“Suicide Squad” (August 5)
Let’s start it off with the obvious one. Even if you are not typically a fan of comic book movies, this is the no-brainer of the season to go watch.
The plot surrounds a team of anti-hero prisoners sent into nearly impossible-to-survive situations in order to make use of their powers that were being wasted away in prison. Hence the name, “Suicide Squad.”
Action packed, witty, and dark, “Suicide Squad” is poised to be the biggest movie of Summer, with the first trailer clocking in at over 47 million views on YouTube.
“Independence Day: Resurgence” (June 24)
The sequel to the 1996 smash hit “Independence Day,” “Independence Day: Resurgence” is looking to cash in on the nostalgia-based hype that the original brings.
But it doesn’t appear to be just another cheap Hollywood reboot, as the trailers have enjoyed largely positive feedback from viewers.
Although Will Smith is not reprising his role, fans of the original movie will appreciate the return of Jeff Goldblum as the scientist David Levinson.
The track record of Hollywood reboots is overall pretty bad (take “Land of the Lost” and “Speed Racer” for instance), but this movie is going to be more of a “Mad Max” than a “Planet of the Apes.”
“Finding Dory” (June 17)
When I first heard that Pixar was making a sequel to Finding Nemo, I groaned. It just seems like such an obvious quick cash grab, right?
Wrong. Well, it at least seems that way. In the typical amazing art style of Pixar, “Finding Dory” centers around Dory’s search for her lost family members as she slowly regains more and more memories of her past.
It’s definitely going to be cute and fun for the kids. Pixar always manages to work in some humor for the older audience, too, ensuring that viewers of all ages will find something to enjoy in what should be Pixar’s next big hit.
“Ghostbusters” (July 15)
Just kidding.
While its heart seems to be in the right place – promoting diversity in blockbuster movies – the execution just does not seem to be there. If its debut trailer is anything to judge the movie on, fans of the original franchise are unhappy with the acting, graphics, and jokes, which they believe to feel forced and just downright terrible.
The first trailer for the movie has amassed almost 800,000 dislikes on YouTube versus only 237,000 likes. It looks like it will take much more than a supernatural phenomenon to save this remake.
“The Conjuring 2” (June 10)
Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga return to their roles as supernatural investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren in this sequel to the smash 2013 hit “The Conjuring.” It is sure to be the most terrifying movie of the summer, with the original being hailed as an instant classic in the horror movie genre.
The premise is similar to that of the first movie. The paranormal investigators go into a house haunted by spirits, and attempt to purge the house of its demons.
Athough it sounds very cliché, it is a recipe for success. “The Conjuring” was one of the most stereotypical horror movies of all time, yet the cliché moments actually became the movie’s strong suits.
“The Conjuring 2” is going to be the best horror movie of the summer, in a season largely depleted of movies of the genre.
“Sausage Party” (Aug. 12)
The trailer for the animated movie “Sausage Party” begins with a variety of cute food in a supermarket, waiting to be bought by a friendly human.
Things take a dark twist when the adorable food realize what really happens after food is taken into the kitchen. The food watch in horror as little baby carrots are brutally murdered right in front of their eyes.
Turns out it was a cleverly disguised raunchy Seth Rogen comedy the whole time.
Just the juxtaposition of cute animation usually reserved for kid movies with the heavily adult humor of Rogen is a reason itself to buy a ticket this summer. The movie does seem legitimately funny as well, although it really is just a toss up with comedies starring Rogen.
Whether it pans out to be hilarious or fall flat, this movie is a must see for slapstick-style comedy fans this summer.
There are so many good movies coming out this summer hat it is nearly impossible to narrow the list down to a few. Moviegoers are in for a treat in the coming months, as there will be something great for everyone in theaters.
