Way to go GNN! You did it! You have brought your credibility to a new low.

Your Cinco de Mayo episode was Fox News cringeworthy.

Instead of just offending Mexican people with hateful rheotoric and discriminitory comments like Fox News, you guys opted for the route of death by appropriation, and did a pretty bad job at it, too.

Speaking Spanish, wearing sombreros, and shaking maracas during your “newscast”? Well done.

After all, it’s common knowledge that all Mexicans wear sombreros and would never leave the casa without their trusty pair of maracas.

The only thing missing from the newscast was a cameo from Speedy Gonzalez himself and that annoying Taco Bell chihuahua.

That’s how Benito Juarez would have wanted it, not that anyone in the GNN writers room would know anything  about him or actual Mexican culture in general.

Is it so much to ask to not have one’s culture appropriated? As a Mexican, I do not appreciate my culture being used for the entertainment of the masses.

It is one thing to try and celebrate Cinco de Mayo by explaining the holiday’s significance and why it’s important.

But it is a totally different beast to debut an episode two weeks before the holiday by having students speak completely in Spanish with subtitles, and have these “newscasts” set in a pueblo, with mariachi music blasting in the background.

That was a stupid idea.

But it could have been a lot worse.

Great job on not wearing false moustaches, using the word “taco”  in an inappropriate context, or making your reporters cholos.

That would have been racist.

But boundaries of taste should not straddle the line between racist and just kinda offensive.

Your mothers taught you better than that, I hope.

The episode itself was not  as bad as much as the logic behind it. Who thought that a Mexican themed GNN was a good idea in the first place?

When is using an ethnicity as a theme for something a good idea? Do you guys read? Or watch the news? Or know Mexican people in general?

Mexicans don’t act like that nor do we dress like that. I guess there was no room in the GNN budget for a fact checker. All that money went to senior ball. Thankfully that was not Mexican themed, though I hear that would have made the food better.

We didn’t have Black GNN for Black History Month, nor did we have Chinese GNN for Chinese New Year. There was no Gay GNN for the Day of Silence. You guys wouldn’t have  had to change the acronym for that one.

What adult “adviser” approved such an utterly garbage idea? A little adult oversight can go a long way in the future as long as your eyes are open.

The next time you guys try “To honor the upcoming holiday Cinco de Mayo,” try to do a little research on the holiday, its significance, or maybe just Mexico in general.

If you “honored” Black history month by putting on blackface and wearing pimp suits, we would have the good Reverend Al Sharpton picketing in front of the school for months.

But at least someone would laugh. But then again, are white supremacists really the audience we want to shoot for?

I didn’t think so.

But alas these are all really bad ideas and even if you enlightened teenagers were to try and go through with them from a place of love the end result will be something ugly, offensive, and not funny.

So let’s regroup. I hope you guys learned your lesson. Next time, stick to something you know (because you all sure don’t know a thing about Mexican culture) like spoofing TV sitcoms about white people.

And whatever you guys do ,just stay away from the show “Blackish.” For the love of Dios leave “Blackish” alone.

Maybe next time instead of focusing so hard on your Spanish pronunciation, you can focus on actually being funny.
