‘World’s Finest’ Review
Two worlds literally collided on Monday during the “Supergirl”’ and “The Flash” crossover hour-long special titled “Worlds Finest” on CBS.
During this phenomenal television event, Barry Allen, aka The Flash (Grant Gustin) loses control of his ability to travel through the multiverse and winds up in Supergirl’s city and universe. For non-fans of “The Flash” on the CW, Allen has proven that by going fast enough he can break the barrier between worlds and enter others. This allows him to explore alternate Earths, and in this case, cross over into other superhero shows.
Allen finds himself in a non-threatening stand off with Kara Danvers, aka Supergirl (Melissa Benoist), star of the new CBS show by the same name. When it becomes clear that both have the same intentions, Allen removes his mask and Danvers places the glasses back on her face and the two shake hands.
Just when it seems one of them is having a harder day than the other, two enemies of Supergirl, Leslie Willis, aka Livewire (Brit Morgan) and Siobhan Smythe, aka Silver Banshee (Italia Ricci) find a common interest in killing their enemies in revenge for them being the way they are now. Livewire is after her former boss Cat Grant, while Banshee is after Danvers.
In exchange for helping her fight the dangerous duo of bad girls and protecting her day job boss Grant, Supergirl promises to help The Flash get back home to his world. The Flash happily offers his services and experience in exchange.
The episode, given its name after the comic book “World’s Fines” where The Flash teamed up with Superman, was supported by many of Supergirl’s main characters, but the focus of the episode was the teams of heroes and the villains. The hilarious cynicism and sarcasm of the bad guys matched almost beautifully with the irresistibly sweet banter of the good guys. It was almost as if the four of them were born to fight one another.
Overall, the episode was well written, acted, and fun. While some may consider this an exaggeration, many will also find this special a refreshing change from the dark, gloomy, and scary world of DC. In a world where Batman fights Superman and The Flash turns on the Arrow, it’s nice to see two heroes who represent the courage and hope that being a superhero is supposed to represent.
The Flash and Supergirl fit together on screen like two puzzle pieces that created an essential part of the big picture.
