The Ups and Downs of NFL Week 3
Week three of the NFL season provided no shortage of surprises and head scratchers, from Brandon Marshall’s lateral-turned-fumble to the Rams accidentally lighting their field on fire during pregame introductions.
But once again, we are left with a few very talented teams – Ravens, Saints and Lions – that have yet to taste victory. Breakout performances at the running back position were widespread across the league, with rising stars Latavius Murray, Devonta Freeman, Joseph Randle, Thomas Rawls, and Alfred Blue all putting up fantastic showings. As per usual, injuries dealt a crushing blow to a few teams in week three.
Week 3 Game Highlights
Atlanta @ Dallas: The Falcons continued to shock the NFL world and remain undefeated, as they handed the Cowboys their first loss of the season in a 38-28 final. Atlanta wide receiver Julio Jones continued to show why he’s the best receiver in the league, hauling in two touchdowns to go along with 164 yards. Freeman had the first breakout game of his young career for the Falcons, rushing for three scores and over 140 yards. For Dallas, Randle found the end zone three times while rushing for close to 90 yards.
Indianapolis @ Tennessee: Quarterback Andrew Luck and the Colts rallied for their first win of the year, scoring 21 points in the fourth quarter, en route to a 35-33 victory. This was Luck’s 12th career fourth quarter/ overtime comeback, in just his fourth year in the NFL. Former 49ers running back Frank Gore had a very strong showing for the Colts, rushing for almost 90 yards and two scores.
Raiders @ Browns: The Raiders continued to show immense improvement in all facets of the game, defeating the Browns 27-20 for their second straight win. Oakland QB Derek Carr was marvelous all day long, throwing for over 300 yards and two touchdowns, while running back Murray rushed for close to 140 yards. First round pick Amari Cooper was the go-to weapon for the Raiders in most key situations, catching eight passes for 134 yards. He has the most receiving yards (290) for a rookie receiver through the first three weeks since Anquan Boldin back in 2003. It’s important to note that this was the first victory for Oakland in the Eastern time zone since December 2009, as well as their first win in their last 12 road contests.
49ers @ Cardinals: San Francisco was absolutely clobbered for the second week in a row, losing 47-7 on the road in Arizona. 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s performance was the laughingstock of the NFL this week, as he threw four interceptions, including two that were returned for touchdowns in the first quarter. For the Cardinals, veterans Chris Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald continued to show flashes of their former brilliance in the winning effort. Arizona is now 3-0 and taking full advantage of a suddenly very weak NFC West division.
Bengals @ Ravens: For the first time in franchise history, the Ravens are off to an 0-3 start. Baltimore lost in heartbreaking fashion for the third week in a row, blowing two fourth quarter leads in a 28-24 defeat. Cincinnati wide receiver A.J. Green finished with a career high 227 receiving yards, and quarterback Andy Dalton came up in the clutch by leading his team on the game winning drive just before the two minute warning. Ravens wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. hauled in 13 catches for 186 yards, as he continues to defy the odds at age 36.
Eagles @ Jets: Philadelphia finally silenced the critics in their first win of the year, surviving a late game push by the Jets in a 24-17 final score. Eagles running back Darren Sproles proved the pivotal spark that lead his team to victory, returning a punt 89 yards for the touchdown. Fellow running back Ryan Mathews ran for over 100 yards on 24 carries. Jets wide receiver Brandon Marshall reached 10,000 receiving yards in his career, but made a costly mistake in the fourth quarter by fumbling in an apparent attempt to lateral the ball to a teammate behind him.
Looking Ahead to Week 4
Ravens @ Steelers, 5:25 p.m. PT on CBS
In the Thursday night showcase, the Steelers play their first game in the absence of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, as they take on a Ravens team still looking for their first win of the season. Michael Vick will start at quarterback for the Steelers.
Raiders @ Bears, 10 a.m. PT on CBS
The Silver and Black look for their third consecutive win, as they storm into the Windy City to face a very bad Chicago Bears team. In last week’s loss at Seattle, the Bears had a total of 10 offensive possessions, resulting in 10 punts. Once again, they are without starting quarterback Jay Cutler and will turn to Jimmy Clausen under center. For Oakland, Carr is coming off two fantastic games in a row, throwing for a combined 665 yards and 5 TDs. The Raiders are looking for another strong outing from Murray and Cooper. Their defense showed lots of improvement last week, but are faced with the task of stopping star running back Matt Forte of the Bears.
Packers @ 49ers, 1:25 p.m. on FOX
The 49ers return home after a nightmare road trip, in which they gave up a combined 90 points to opponents. Expect yet another massive blowout, as quarterback Aaron Rodgers lead the high powered Packers offense into the Bay Area. Kaepernick is coming off the worst game of his career, finishing with only 65 passing yards and 3.2 quarterback rating.
Chiefs @ Bengals, 10 a.m. PT
Kansas City faces an absolutely critical matchup against Cincinnati, as they look to even their record at 2-2 and keep pace in the AFC West. After two tough, close defeats to the Broncos and Packers, the Chiefs take on an undefeated Bengals team that has the chance to distance themselves in the AFC North.
Jets @ Dolphins, 6:30 a.m. PT
These AFC East rivals will travel to London for the first of three NFL games at Wembley Stadium this year as part of the “2015 International Series”. Both teams are coming off of losses at home in week three.
- There are pretty much no flashy or attractive matchups across the NFL this week. The only game containing two winning teams will occur when the Vikings travel to Denver to take on the Broncos.
