Hectic NFL offseason has dramatic implications
The National Football League’s (NFL) yearly free agency period is never predictable, but this year’s had even more surprises than ever before. Teams have almost a month to negotiate with free agents they are interested in, and by the first week of this year’s period, the NFL seemed to be a league with completely different teams after shocking trades.
Several teams made great pick ups, while others were forced to give up key players. Wide receiver Brandon Marshall was one of the Chicago Bears all star players, and debatably one of the best wide receivers in the NFL today. Marshall’s controversial angry locker room rants were seen as a distraction and simply harmful to the team’s ability to play well together, which eventually led to the decision to let him go.
The New Orlean Saints were also going “trade crazy” and released star tight end Jimmy Graham, guard Ben Grubbs, and wide receiver Kenny Stills in just a few short days. The Saints’ roster is almost unrecognizable with the subtractions of Pierre Thomas and Curtis Lofton as well. They did not just give away, but also signed C.J. Spiller, Dannell Ellerbe, Brandon Browner, and Max Unger.
While some teams were losing players, others were making big gains, especially the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts picked up running back Frank Gore and wide receiver Andre Johnson. Both big names in the NFL will make a huge impact on the Colts’ success in the upcoming 2015 season.
The San Francisco 49ers are going to have a rough 2015 season ahead of them after losing linebackers Patrick Willis and Chris Borland, on top of losing Gore. But fortunately for them, they have nine draft picks to hopefully rebuild the team.
Good news for 49er fans, rebuilding is already in motion for the San Francisco team. Linebacker Lance Briggs and wide receiver Hakeem Nicks met with the team for tryouts on March 28. This wasn’t the typical meet and greet just to chat, they had full on workouts, and are being looked at for serious contracts.
On top of defensive additions, the 49ers have also signed veteran running back Reggie Bush, in order to compensate for the loss of Gore, and wide receiver Jerome Simpson of the Minnesota Vikings.
The Bay Area’s very own Oakland Raider’s were one of the most active franchises in this years free agency period.
The Raiders had a total of 12 free agency signings, the most in the league this year. Most significant being them signing Michael Crabtree for a 1 year, $1.4 million contract. Their pick ups also included Christian Ponder, former Vikings quarterback. Other free agency pick ups include three defensive starters: middle linebacker Curtis Lofton, tackle Dan Williams, and strong safety Nate Allen. The pick up of Lofton is speculated to be the biggest impact of the free agency picks made by the Raiders, due to their weak defensive turn out last year.
Among the successes of the free agency for the Raiders, there was also some losses, such as the signing of running back DeMarco Murray slipping through their fingers, as well as defensive tackle, Ndamukong Suh.
The 2015 NFL free agency period was debatably the most shocking yet, with more trades, upsets, and shocks than ever. Only time will tell how each decision plays out for each individual team in the organization
And not to forget the upcoming draft from April 30 to May 2 still has more to offer for each team as well. The 2015-2016 has a lot in store for us football fans.
