Digital Paw Print: New tech announced at this year’s Mobile World Congress

Nearly 6,000 miles away, in Barcelona, Spain, one of the biggest and most highly-anticipated mobile technology events occurs every year in early March: the Mobile World Congress (MWC).

At this event, some of the biggest contenders in the smartphone universe go head-to-head for your attention and – most importantly – your wallet.

Let’s see who takes the crown.

SAMSUNG

As one of the largest smartphone manufacturers, Samsung has a lot of weight on their shoulders.

With Apple’s latest innovations looming on the horizon, the South Korean handset maker has to deliver.

At MWC, Samsung announced the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge.

The S6 is powered by a 2.1 GHz octa-core Exynos CPU, which means it’s powered by eight cores, or processors.

The onboard storage is limited to the 32GB, 64GB, or 128GB variants with no availability for expansion via a microSD card.

The phone utilizes a 16 MP rear camera with flash and a 5 MP front-facing camera for those adorable selfies.

Samsung went with a five-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED technology for the display, with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels, producing a pixel density of 577 ppi (pixels per inch).

That means all of your funny photos, abnormal YouTube videos, addicting games, and other media will have crystal-clear quality.

The most distinct change is the all-new aluminum frame and Gorilla Glass 4 on the front and back.

This gives the phone a more premium feel, but the glass back is going to be a giant fingerprint magnet.

The S6 Edge has identical specifications to the S6. The only difference between the two is that the Edge has two curved edges.

HTC

HTC also had some big announcements to make at MWC.

HTC unveiled the One M9, which is now powered by a zippy Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor.

But the phone brings back a lot – maybe a little bit too much – from the previous model, such as the identical aluminum body design.

The camera does receive an upgrade, but its software needs improvement.

One of the most exciting new products from HTC is the new Vive VR (virtual reality) headset.

The headset was co-developed by Valve, the owner of the popular video game marketplace, Steam.

The VR headset is designed to compete against the Oculus Rift and will release sometime this year.

LG

LG showed off the Magna and Spirit at MWC, both of which are targeted in the higher end of budget devices.

They will both offer at least a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, 1080p video recording, and Android 5.0 Lollipop.

LG also pulled the covers off of the Leon and Joy, both of which will be on the lower spectrum of budget handsets.

They are also powered by at least a 1.2GHz processor and will have 1GB of RAM.

The phones will offer a rear-facing camera somewhere in the range of five to eight megapixels.

SONY

Sony whipped up three brand-new devices to bring to MWC.

One is the Xperia M4 Aqua, which is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor and is backed by a full 2GB of RAM.

The phone features a five-inch display with a resolution of 1280 by 720, plus a 13 MP rear camera and a 5 MP front-facing camera.

And if the name didn’t make it obvious enough, the phone is completely waterproof.

Another device that Sony has announced is the Xperia Z4 Tablet.

The fuel to this tablet’s fire is a 2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor and 3GB of RAM.

The tablet also has a 2K (2,560×1,600 resolution) display, an 8.1 MP rear-facing camera, and a 5 MP front-facing camera.

The tablet runs Android 5.0 Lollipop.

The final devices that were introduced at MWC were the Xperia E4 and E4g.

Both of these phones are powered by a 1.3 GHz and 1.5 GHz MediaTek processor, respectively.

Both devices have a 5 MP rear camera, which is capable of recording in 1080 pixels,  and a 2 MP front-facing camera, which is capable of recording in 720 pixels.

Both devices will be powered by Android 4.4.4 KitKat, and will release sometime this spring for around $145.
