Gearing up for MLB season
With the 2015 Major League Baseball season fast approaching, what can we expect from the reigning World Series champs, the San Francisco Giants, and their underappreciated rival across the bay, the Oakland Athletics?
The Giants have had a quiet offseason, compared to the A’s at least, by signing left fielder Nori Aoki, and resigning pitchers Jake Peavy and Ryan Vogelsong.
The team also traded for third baseman Casey Mcgehee to fill the hole left by Pablo Sandoval, who perhaps had seen an end to the even year World Series Championships and left for a “new challenge” in Boston.
Though some fans look at these moves and believe that not much has been done, the Giants have managed to keep together their core players who have led the team to championships in 2010, 2012 and 2014.
It will be tough for the Giants to repeat another world championship this year because of to the massive improvement of another division rival, the San Diego Padres.
With the additions of sluggers Matt Kemp and Justin Upton, 2012 rookie of the year Wil Myers, and pitcher James Shields, this is a team that will contend this year.
Other teams to look for in the NL come playoff time are the solid Cardinals, and the Nationals, who have just added pitcher Max Scherzer, one of the best in the game. Teams to look for in the wild card are the Pirates and Marlins.
The offseason for the A’s has been one full of surprises, and surely has had fans calling for the head of General Manager Billy Beane after he traded away four of the team’s six All-Stars in a matter of months.
Among those were fan favorite and third baseman Josh Donaldson, first baseman Brandon Moss, catcher Derek Norris, and pitcher Jeff Samardzija.
With these trades the A’s were able to not only add more youth to the roster, but add prospects to the minor league squad to develop for the future.
With some fresh faces and a deep roster, the A’s should look to make a playoff push, though it will not be easy, especially playing in the same division with the Angels and Mariners.
The 2015 Major League Baseball season looks to be quite an exciting one, especially for the Bay Area.
