Winston is a gamble for NFL teams
After Jameis Winston’s blowout loss to Oregon in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1, many sports fans are wondering what’s next for the man they call “Famous Jameis”?
Winston answered that question earlier this month when he declared he is coming out early for the NFL draft.
Now that teams know that he will be an available selection, they can take in the factors on whether they want to take a flyer on the 21 year-old Florida State quarterback.
Talent is not a factor. He is one of the most physically intriguing and talented prospects in the draft, drawing comparisons to the infamous Jamarcus Russell, whose off-field issues led to his release in 2009 and earned him the label of one of the biggest draft busts in NFL history.
Many fear that this will be the case with Winston, who won the Heisman Trophy last year as a freshman but has many self-inflicted wounds off the field, including a sexual assault accusation and shoplifting.
Winston’s talent is very attractive, and many teams are salivating over what he brings to the table as a player. But talent isn’t everything, and there have been countless draft picks on extremely talented players who don’t pan out in the NFL because of issues off of the field.
Some players just aren’t meant for the NFL, and it is time that teams stop ignoring the red flags.
If there are red flags with players such as Winston, teams need to provide mentoring and guidance. Teams can’t expect to just throw these players onto the field and expect success.
Whatever team drafts Winston should be willing to give him mentoring and guidance with his transition to the NFL. Without that, it is difficult to see Winston becoming anything other than a bust or a flame-out in the league, barring a miraculous turn around.
Many mock drafts have Winston going first to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers or second to the Tennessee Titans. Both teams in desperate need of a quarterback of Winston’s caliber.
Winston could either be the next elite starter in the NFL or the next bust. If he does flame out, it wouldn’t surprise too many people. But his fate rests solely in the hands of him and his team.
