Powder puff kicks off this afternoon

The seniors and juniors face off on the football field this afternoon for the glory and bragging rights of winning the 27th annual powder puff game.

After losing last year’s game, This year’s seniors hope to redeem themselves by beating their underclassmen rivals on the gridiron.

With a little more than 60 seniors and about 100 juniors playing, this year’s game should be another exciting battle.

The seniors have a roster already set up and are pumped to win.  Many of the seniors feel confident despite their loss last year.

Some of the first-time players have joined powder puff for the fun and the experience.

“I thought it’d be a good senior experience,” first-string defensive end Karly DeMain said. “I didn’t play last year and our loss made me want to do it this year.

“We’re absolutely determined to win. Our team is willing to bring a victory.”

Quarterback and defensive back coach senior Matt Lorenz has taught the senior girls the basics of the positions on both sides of the ball.

The seniors were given their positions at their Monday practice and now have a general feel for their roles before today’s game.

But that doesn’t mean that the juniors aren’t pining for their own victory.

With 10 coaches to manage and teach more than 100 girls, the juniors definitely struggled during their practices early on.

“We’ve been going over all the plays and teaching people what to do,” junior Madeline Hurd said.

Even after their rocky start, junior Kellie Waldo has faith that her class will win against the seniors.

“It was challenging in the beginning to get into a position and learn football,” Waldo said. “But everything’s coming together and I think we actually have a chance.”

Even if the juniors don’t win this year, they always have next year to redeem themselves, unlike the seniors.

“If we lose this year, I want redemption for next year,” junior Hanna DeHerrera said. “But if we win this year, then I want to be reigning champion next year.”

Despite the juniors having larger team, some seniors think that these numbers will turn against the juniors.

“Numbers will work against them,” DeMain said. “They won’t be able to remember their plays as well.”

Both teams are confident in their plays but only today’s game will determine whose faith is stronger and who will go home with the glory and the victory.
