Prom and ball bring pain to all

Junior Prom has come and gone and next on many students’ agenda is Senior Ball.

Prom and ball are the bat mitzvah, the quinceanera, the Sweet Sixteen party every young man never had. He gets to dress up in his finest suit and tie, ride in a limo, and stay out late.

But this isn’t without quite a bit of struggle. It takes a significant amount of napping to stay out that late, and hours of Yelp surfing to find the perfect limo company.

The tuxedo, the classiest uniform for men, needs to be right as well. Most teenage men don’t own their own tuxes, so they must resort to renting these stylish garments at places like Jos A. Bank and Men’s Wearhouse.

Both of these shops are suspicious, for two reasons. First, money houses make strange suits, and second, spelling puns are not fashionable.

Women don’t understand the struggle men go through to rent tuxedos. We must get to a store before they close, chose one of five suit options, and try it on.

Renting a tuxedo can run from $120 to $200, which most guys can only obtain by working, or winning a bet. This is before even choosing the tuxedo’s details.

To rent a tuxedo, one must choose a suit, tuxedo shirt, tie, corset, cumberbund, epaulet set, vest, jockstrap, and breeches.

Suits come in many diverse colors, all variations of black including: dark gray, dim, onyx, midnight, coal, lost soul, ebony, absence of light, pit, obsidian, raven, nox, mystery, shadow, void, sleeping panther, crow, pitch, ink, jet, taupe, davy’s gray, olive, space, licorice, and dark blackety-black black white by Armani.

Good luck trying to find a matching tie.

Most males also try to match one garment’s hue with their dates’ attire. This can also cause problems, especially if the girls want to keep it a secret or their dress’ color is from the Crayola 500 crayon set.

If the female of the pairing wants to keep it confidential, the man would have to either rent every color of vest to play it safe, or be bold and just match himself with a night colored vest. If the dress color is something unorthodox, like Malachite, Razzmatazz, Xanadu, Azure, or United Nations Blue, matching ties and vests will be hard to find.

But as of February, members of Amazon Prime are guaranteed these “off” colored clothes when paired with valid products, like crew socks, and ironic T-shirts.

Every man must learn to tie his tie, or be a boy and buy a bogus band. Pre-tied ties are a weak man’s choice.

It can be a huge struggle, however, to tie some of the more difficult knots, like the bowtie, Eldredge knot, and the reef knot. While this last knot is a Boy Scout knot, and can be done blindfolded, it is almost impossible to do it in a classy fashion.

Speaking of ties, they are one of the most stressful parts of preparing a suit. Thick or skinny, necktie or bowtie, bolo tie or cravat, these are all questions on men’s minds.

Since the 1600s, men have been wearing celebratory neck ware, and this continues today. The bowtie is traditionally used with the tuxedo, but some fellows who want to mix it up a little, or don’t have tuxedo studs, wear long ties.

The most important thing is that the suit is comfortable. It doesn’t matter how fashionable or in sync with your date your tuxedo is.

If one happens to develop a rash from his suit, well, at least he looked good.
