Upcoming movie based off of popular teen novel
Whether lying or idiocy drives you up a wall, there’s a faction for you in Veronica Roth’s best-selling novel “Divergent.”
“Divergent” is a thrilling book that has been made into a new film that’s being released on March 21. The fast-paced and thoughtful book contains lots of action, romance, and hidden plot twists while still delving deeper into the human psyche.
In the novel, Beatrice Prior, the courageous but conflicted main character, is forced to make a choice that will decide the rest of her future when she is 16 years old.
Her world is divided up into “factions,” which are groups of people living in the same city that have different morals, values, and jobs. The premise of the first book relies upon a society made up of five distinct groups and the factionless. They are Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Erudite, and Dauntless.
Beatrice’s birth faction, Abnegation, believes that the world’s problems would be fixed if there weren’t any greed in the world and everyone was selfless. They wear only gray clothes, trying to slip into the background and do good unnoticed.
Amity is rather like Abnegation in that they value being friendly and respectful to everyone. Sporting bright yellows and reds, they obviously see no need to blend in and hide their individuality as the Abnegation do.
Candor, often regarded as insensitive by outsiders, sees the world as black and white like the clothes they wear. To them, the most evil act of humans is telling a lie. They tell the truth no matter how harsh it may be to the recipient.
Erudite believes that knowledge is the key to peace. They are rational, if not cold and calculating.
The last faction, Dauntless, stamps out cowardice within their ranks by demanding extreme acts of bravery.
Hostility between factions is common, and switching from your birth faction is seen as a sort of betrayal, but Beatrice doesn’t fit into hers.
In preparation for her fateful choice, she undergoes a mandatory psychological test to show her aptitude for a particular faction.
Unfortunately, Beatrice comes out with three aptitudes, a forbidden situation that the test administrator calls “Divergent.”
Beatrice is forced to choose a faction to live out the rest of her life in without the test results to aid her, and she chooses to leave her family behind and join Dauntless.
Tough, tattooed, and nearly fearless, Dauntless turns out to be less welcoming than she had hoped, and there is a very real chance that she will end up factionless, the lowest group in society, instead. “Tris,” as she now calls herself, has to force herself to fit in with this new faction before she is kicked to the streets.
This will mean jumping off trains, fighting in hand-to-hand combat, and discovering secrets along the way that few want uncovered.
In the movie, directed by Neil Burger, Shailene Woodley takes on the lead role as Tris Prior and Theo James portrays Four, Tris’s love interest and fellow Dauntless member.
Woodley is best known for her roles on the TV show “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” and in the much-acclaimed film “The Descendants,” for which she won a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture.
James is a British actor most recognized for his parts in “Bedlam” and “Golden Boy.” Along with these two stars, Ansel Elgort (known for the 2013 film “Carrie”) will play Caleb Prior, Zoë Kravitz (“After Earth,” 2013) will play Tris’s friend Christina, and Maggie Q (TV series “Nikita”) will play Tori, the Dauntless test administrator that first warned Tris she was Divergent.
Based on the numerous trailers that have been released, Woodley looks like she will be a good fit to play Tris. She fits into the gray, subservient world of Abnegation easily, but at the same time can show her true strength when she becomes Dauntless.
With James, the match is harder to tell. Four isn’t all about toughness and fearlessness, though that is what he shows to the outside. Once he and Tris begin dating, however, she will experience a softer part of him, one that comes from a traumatizing past. It remains to be seen whether James can pull off the weak Four as well as the strong one.
Maggie Q will make an excellent Tori. She is mysterious, powerful, and seems to know more than she lets on, exactly the feeling we get from Tori in the book.
“Divergent,” as a book, is a masterpiece. The characters are complex and the world in which they live is explained in great detail.
The upcoming film has big shoes to fill, but with great actors, actresses, and director the movie adaptation is sure to be a success.
