Timberlake comes back around
Justin Timberlake wasn’t lying when he said he was bringing sexy back.
After taking a six-year hiatus from music, our beloved JT will return to the music industry with his third album titled “The 20/20 Experience,” which was released today.
Previously released are two singles off the album called “Suit and Tie” and “Mirrors,” which have left many fans of Timberlake in much anticipation for the new album.
Coming from a very music-oriented background and having been a member of the very popular ’90s boy band ‘N SYNC, it did not take long for Timberlake, along with members Chris Kirkpatrick, Joey Fatone, JC Chasez and Lance Bass, to shoot to success in 1998 with songs like “I Want You Back,” “Bye Bye Bye,” (the band’s signature song), and “It’s Gonna Be Me.”
They performed at Madison Square Garden and went on tour to promote their fourth album “Celebrity,” which extended with 30 more tour dates added because of its popularity.
After the band went on hiatus in 2002, Timberlake started to focus on his solo career, putting aside his duties as a member of ‘N SYNC. The band went on several TV appearances together through the 2000s but made no other albums after 2002. Breaking off from ‘N SYNC only made Timberlake more popular than he already was. He won two Grammys in 2004 and performed alongside Janet Jackson during the Super Bowl.
With a beefy career under his belt, his rise to popularity with songs like “Sexy Back,” “My Love” and “What Goes Around… Comes Around” wasn’t a surprise.
“(Timberlake) is charismatic,” said sophomore Kimiya Shokiri. “He’s also really cute and has a good sense of humor. I think that’s what makes him so popular.”
Not only that, Timberlake used his high falsettos, R&B-like melodies, and catchy beats to woo many into loving him and his music.
Timberlake’s past two albums, “Justified,” released in 2002, and “FutureSex/LoveSound,” released in 2006, had a unique mix of upbeat songs filled with falsettos and catchy beats. His slower songs had a R&B vibe to them, which was different than the usual ballads of that time.
“I think his new songs are pretty similar to his old songs, but similar in a good way,” said sophomore Sally Kim.
“Suit and Tie” incorporates high falsettos and suave beats that make anyone want to get up and dance. It’s new beat was different from the old Timberlake and brings a new and classy feel. “Mirrors” mixes nostalgic memories of “FutureSex/LoveSound” with Timberlake’s talent of beatboxing and R&B melody.
Timberlake made his first appearance back in the music industry at the Super Bowl pre-show, on Feb. 2 in New Orleans. He performed, with a 15-piece band, “Pusher Lover Girl” and “That Girl,” both unreleased songs off the album, and “Suit and Tie” with Jay-Z.
Timberlake wore a suit and tie, holding true to the song name. He was also clean shaven and had his hair slicked back which only added to his new, classier look.
The two songs differ greatly from the “typical” Timberlake song. “Pusher Love Girl” is a song with a soulful melody, and falsettos that never fail.
While “That Girl” gave off a calming and cool “jazz” sound to it, all while maintaining charming and classy lyrics.
The song, like many of the other songs off Timberlake’s album, is upbeat and has falsettos throughout the song.
“He’s grown as a person,” said freshman Alyssa Tucker. “I think because he’s grown, he’ll make material that is more mature, which is good.”
Timberlake’s bigger comeback, however, was at the Grammys. It was there that he performed with Jay-Z for “Suit and Tie,” an ultimate teaser for what future plans in the music industry. Timberlake also performed “Push Lover Girl”.
He also performed with Jay-Z earlier this month on “Saturday Night Live.”
Timberlake has released tour dates already for the upcoming tour titled “Legends of the Summer,” which he is co-headlining with Jay-Z. The two are set to tour Canada and the U.S, coming to Candlestick Park in San Francisco on July 26.
“I am really excited to see Justin Timberlake in concert,” said senior Kyle Costamanga, who bought tickets to the Candlestick show. “I’ve been a fan for a long time.”
Justin Timberlake’s comeback is definitely a big one filled with high expectations that JT will no doubt fulfill.
