Cities heatin’ up spring fever- Santa Cruz

From its miles of warm, sun-kisssed sand, lush forests, brilliant ocean waves, and fun, friendly vibe, Santa Cruz embodies all the characteristics of a relaxing destination for spring break.

The Boardwalk, one of the more well-known parts of Santa Cruz, attracts thousands of visitors annually.  It features exciting rides, a collection of food booths, and different events throughout the year, such as the annual Santa Cruz Clam Chowder Cook-off.  The rides and the food require money, but Boardwalk admission is free.

“The Boardwalk has a lot of fun classic rides,” said sophomore Hannah Johnson.  “There’s also mini golf and laser tag.”

Although many people visit Santa Cruz for the Boardwalk and the thrill of its rides, the city has much to offer in its many beaches, bonfire sites, and surfing spots as well.

Cowell Beach, also known as Main Beach, has a wide variety of activities including beach volleyball or just unwinding on the silky sand after a rough week.

West Cliff Drive, another good place to visit, is a rocky shoreline, but has a few small, inviting beaches along the coast that are especially breathtaking at sunset. Seabright Beach is also a well-liked hotspot with available bonfire pits.

Beaches with excellent scenery and photographic opportunities include Natural Bridges State Beach and Sunset Beach.

Surfing in Santa Cruz is another unforgettable experience. Pleasure Point and Steamer Lane, and The Hook are popular surfing sites.

“I really like surfing there,” said senior Adam Kimmel, “The water’s kind of cold, but the waves are always nice.”

Sophomore Jessica Gehring also enjoys surfing in Santa Cruz and recommends lessons for beginners willing to try.

For those who prefer to hang out downtown, this city also boasts a variety of shops and eateries.

“Santa Cruz always has really good shopping, and cute clothes that are pretty cheap downtown,” said Gehring.

Besides well-known stores like Forever 21, downtown Santa Cruz has specialty boutiques like Idle Hands, a vintage store with handmade, trendy clothes.

Many recommend the unique restaurants there, too.

“It’s a really nice, quiet coastal town that has a lot of good family-owned restaurants,” said junior Sam Dahmen.

Pizza My Heart, one of the many family-owned food attractions, serves delicious fresh pizza daily that can be bought with one of their trademark shirts for only $6.  The pizza comes in a Frisbee with the restaurant’s logo, available for purchase for a few quarters.

Diners and restaurants like Jack’s Burgers, Lillian’s Italian Kitchen, and The Crepe Place are also highly recommended. Jack’s Burgers, although nothing fancy, offers cheap, tasty burgers, while Lillian’s Italian Kitchen is a bit more expensive, but has flavorful pasta.

Santa Cruz has quite a few delicious dessert alternatives as well.

“There are a lot of good ice cream parlors with waffle cones and exotic flavors,” said Dahmen.

Marianne’s Ice Cream, which has been around for 55 years, has 87 flavors, all with smooth, creamy textures. Some of the more uncommon flavors are lavender and blueberry cheesecake. The 50/50, an orange creamsicle flavor, is amazing, too.

Since breakfast is very important to locals in Santa Cruz, the streets are filled with coffee shops. Café Delmarette, Verve Coffee Roasters, and the Abbey are among some of the top picks. The comfortable, cozy environment is perfect for chatting with friends or just hanging out.

Despite being packed at times with people from the Boardwalk, Santa Cruz is also known for its music, art, and general laidback feel. Musicians with unique instruments can be found playing around town.

“It’s a very chill place,” said Gehring. “People are a lot friendlier and more accepting.”

Senior Monica Suh mentioned touring the beautiful campus of UC Santa Cruz as an option. Hiking through secluded, grand forests is another alternative for people looking for a calming environment.

“It’s very sunny and woodsy,” said senior Stephanie Karbo.

The Skyline to Sea Trail, although very long, has gorgeous waterfalls and redwoods. Pogonip is also a pretty hiking area.

In addition, Roaring Camp Railroads has many scenic routes that wind through the city’s beaches and mountains.

On Saturday and Sunday mornings, Santa Cruz is a perfect destination with all its cafés, bakeries, and small shops. One can enjoy walking down the streets and exploring some of the beaches with friends.

West Cliff Drive has a slightly hidden pathway that opens up to a small beach perfect for doing random handstands and taking pictures.

At some of the beaches, there are even benches for watching talented surfers. The locals are always nice and friendly roo.

Whether seeking a serene and easy weekend, or a enjoyable time, Santa Cruz is the place to go.

“What makes it different is it feels like the sun is always shining,” said Gehring.

“With the feel of Santa Cruz, you could go down there, spend a day, and just have fun.”
