Green Day is numero ‘¡Uno!’
The wait is over for Green Day fans, as their new album “¡Uno!” was released on Sept. 25, more than three years after their previous masterpiece, “21st Century Breakdown.”
Fans won’t have to endure such a wait for Green Day’s follow up to “¡Uno!” as it is the first of three albums to come out within the next few months.
When Green Day released “American Idiot” in 2004, and “21st Century Breakdown” in 2009, fans could hear the wild turn the band took from their original works. Many of the songs in those albums had deep political undertones and were styled to that of a more pop-punk type of sound, rather than the band’s original alternative style.
Both “American Idiot” and “21st Century Breakdown” were heavily influenced by the political climates of the President George W. Bush era, and were styled to that of a rock opera. These albums also helped to develop the “American Idiot” musical, which has received critical acclaim.
After “21st Century Breakdown” was released, Green Day had a huge stream of creativity and wrote nearly 30 new songs. They decided to release three successive albums a few months apart, appropriately calling them “¡Uno!,” “¡Dos!” and “¡Tré!”
In these new albums, Green Day pushes for a sound that lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong describes to Rolling Stone magazine as “somewhere between AC-DC and early Beatles.”
Some new songs vary between a garage rock to a dance music type of sound, such as “Kill The DJ.” Others share similarities to some of their pre-“American Idiot” songs, such as “Oh Love” and “Let Yourself Go.” “¡Uno!” gives off a more positive vibe than “21st Century Breakdown” and “American Idiot,” which were very political and angry.
The new album is very enjoyable, as it displays new styles and brings Green Day back to their roots. It offers a wide variety of songs that almost anyone can enjoy.
Fans were anticipating an upcoming tour to accompany the release of “¡Uno!,” but that may be postponed after Armstrong’s recent violent and profane meltdown at the iHeartRadio Festival on Sept. 21. (Check it out on YouTube.)
Armstrong is in rehab, forcing the band to postpone upcoming promotional appearances, according to a statement on Green Day’s website.
“¡Uno!” is notable among many punk albums before it because of how different it is in style and attitude. I can’t wait for “¡Dos!” and “¡Tré!”
