The set of seniors includes an athlete from tennis, swim, softball, baseball, soccer, and even rowing!

Cal High has produced many collegiate women’s soccer players over the past few seasons. This year is no different. Seniors Darby Broeker, Simone Melvin, and Erika Emmanuel are all attending highly competitive, athletic schools to play soccer.

Erika is headed to UC-Davis in the fall as both Darby and Simone are going to the East Coast to play; Darby to the University of North Carolina-Charlotte and Simone to Belmont Abbey College, also located in North Carolina.

Darby is ranked as a four-star recruit by TopDrawerSoccer.com and as the No. 9 overall prospect in the 2011 Northern California and Hawaii player rankings.

“I can’t believe that everything is happening so fast,” said Darby. “It seems like just yesterday I was playing in Wreck-leagues.”

On the diamond, the Grizzlies’ star pitcher and hitter are attending local schools. Senior Evan Brisentine is going to pitch for Santa Clara University and Steven Moen is going to catch for Sonoma State in the fall.

Steven led Cal in virtually all batting categories, hitting a whopping .371 on the season. Evan had a 6-1 record on the season including a 0.99 Earned Run Average. Mangers and players throughout EBAL this year considered him as the hardest throwing pitcher in the league.

“(Evan Brisentine) Brizz is a one of a kind pitcher,” said manager Dan Ward. “(Steven) Moen is an amazing talent too. Both schools are lucky to have them.”

As for the other diamond, NCS Softball player of the Year Brittany Wright had been striking out opponents left and right, leading the Cal High softball team to an 18-7 overall record. She is attending Holy Names University next year in Oakland.

In the pool, senior Delise Batiza led the Grizzlies swim team to multiple personal records and victories. Delise was one of the most highly recruited athletes in the area having different offers from Division I schools like Arizona State University and the University of Hawaii.

As one of the top swimmers in the nation, Delise ultimately chose Oregon State University because of their “beautiful campus, amazing athletic program, great coaches, and awesome team members”.

On the tennis court, member of the NCS Doubles champions, senior Kellie Taylor is attending UC-San Diego in the fall.

“I played tournaments every weekend for the past two years to get a top national ranking so schools would consider me on the team,” said Kellie. “I’m already looking forward to making great friends on the team and kicking some tennis butt!”

But the most unique of the scholarship getters is senior Sarah Hultin, for rowing. As the only athlete who didn’t receive a scholarship for a Cal High sports, Sarah had only been rowing for two years before a recruiter for San Diego State University contacted her.

“I was recruited by Alison Abrams of San Diego State. I emailed her asking about the (Crew) team and we got to talking. She invited me down on a recruiting trip to meet with the team and see the rowing facility and practices,” said Sarah. “The head coach liked my athleticism and determination and they offered me a scholarship as a freshman.”

Though many more Grizzlies played sports, these nine competitors were the cream of the crop in their respective sports and are all looking forward to having long and successful careers in their sport of choice.
