The upcoming school year will bring new Associated Student Body (ASB) officers.
Juniors Stephanie Smith and Brian Paniagua were elected earlier this month to be Cal’s ASB president and vice president, respectively.
“I am fit to be president because I have a genuine concern for bettering our school and listening to the student body and making their concerns my priority,” said Smith.
Leadership teacher Eileen Mantz believes Smith has the qualities needed for the job, such as good ideas, communication skills and knowledge about the school.
The president and vice president represent the student body as a whole. ASB presidents oversee many activities at Cal, including freshmen orientations, academic relations, publicity, rallies, and PTSA. Anything not directly class related involves the ASB president.
Smith knows many different groups of people at school, so she can get opinions and ideas from all types of people. Smith has been involved in leadership for the past two years and is a member of the women’s varsity volleyball team.
“I have already started working with Mr. Corti to establish a student store at Cal and I would love to hear any other ideas to make our school better,” said Smith.
Paniagua decided to run for vice president so he could help the school more and have a greater say in what goes on at the school.
He has been in leadership for two years and is a key member of the cross country team. Paniagua believes getting students involved and excited about activities will create a better campus environment.
“They are both good leaders and I think they will help the school a lot,” said junior Jamison Shapland.
Like Smith, Paniagua wants to make simple changes to better the school by helping with school issues and policies.
“I wanted to do something more for the school,” said Paniagua. “I want my voice to be heard.”
Current ASB president Bryan Williamson thinks Smith will do a great job improving the school.
This year, Williamson has worked to improve rallies, something Smith hopes to continue by getting more students involved. Williamson knows Smith will do a great job, but had some parting words of advice.
“Find time for yourself; it’s a lot of work,” said Williamson.
