Last week Lip Sync was showcased in the California High School Theater on Feb. 29 at six and eight o’clock. And it was an impressive performance.
The show started off with a well made digital trailer, that introduced each of the classes. It was styled after reality shows, with interviews with several of the students who gave insights into the interactions happening behind the scenes. Although the juniors showing a group of students being forced to march in step with a kid in a cow costume was rather strange.
After that, the hosts of the show appeared and welcomed everyone to Lip Sync. They appeared again rather consistently after each performance, with games to play with the audience. Honestly, the show would have been a lot better if the hosts just introduced each performance and got off stage so the students could perform. The hosts were rather awkward when talking, and everything was so scripted there was no natural flow between performances.
The freshman performances was confusing for a while. It took me a while to figure out that there was a connecting theme with the show, and it was television shows. Pretty much, every song was connected to a popular television show, from “Big Bang Theory” to “Spongebob.” The freshman class did a decent job, which is to be expected seeing how it was the first Lip Sync ever. The performers all knew their choreography and performed with a lot of energy. For their first performance ever, they did well.
The sophomore performance was a lot better in comparison, mostly because of their experience in Lip Sync from last year. Their theme was the Grammies, and it went pretty well. They had best country song, best love song, best dance song, and many others. The flow was a bit stilted when the two students presenting the Grammies would come out and introduce the next performance. The students were well choreographed, and their dances matched the songs a lot more than the freshman performance.
The juniors were a great performance. Their theme was weather, which seemed weird at first, but was pulled off quite well. They only used songs that had parts of the weather mentioned in them. And the juniors used their male students rather well, often making them cross dress for comedic effect. They did take it a bit too far after a while and make it more annoying than funny. The juniors all danced together, working as one unit instead of as individuals like the lower classes. And the end where they all formed a circle around a kid in a sun costume to sing “You Are My Sunshine” was adorable. It was one of the best performances of the night.
And finally, the seniors. They were the best performance of the evening, and I’m not just saying that because I’m a senior. No, they were the best because they had fun with their performance. Their theme was the party like the world’s ending, and they rolled with it. The seniors pumped out some rather old songs that were familiar blasts from the past. Not to mention that every time they had a piece of choreography they all performed together. It was a very professional performance. The seniors also used their male students for some cross dressing fun, but made sure to take breaks from using this tactic to keep it hilarious each time. Another noticeable difference from the seniors was that they had a lot more full class dance numbers, and all of them were perfect. The senior class was the best part of the night.
All in all, Lip Sync was a fun show. There were some dull parts, but those appear in every show. All of the hard work the students put into their show payed off, and made it an entertaining night.
