These Cal High students aren’t celebrities, but they’ve brushed shoulders with the rich-and-famous. Here are their stories.
Senior Nicole Pipp had just seen the play, “Wicked” and was walking out of the theater in New York City with her family, when she felt someone lightly pushing her back to make her walk faster.
In response to the person’s rude behavior, she turned around and gave them a dirty look, only to see that it was Kanye West and his girlfriend.
Nicole remembers seeing Kanye in his signature shades, despite it being late at night, walking with a girl.
“I didn’t know it was him,” Nicole said. “My mom told me, ‘You just gave Kanye West a dirty look!’”
A long-time Jonas Brothers fan, senior Melissa Wright has met the Jonas Brothers on several occasions.
The very first time was in April of 2007 at the Sacramento Strawberry Festival.
“It was before they were signed so there weren’t many people at the concert,” Melissa said. “They got to meet everyone who went.”
Melissa was even lucky enough to get a look inside of their tour bus. Unfortunately, she fainted while on the bus but was quickly comforted by the Jonas Brothers themselves.
Band members Kevin and Nick have met Melissa and two of her friends six times, and know them by name.
“Joe recognizes us, but he’s bad with names,” Melissa adds with a laugh.
Melissa has photos and memories to look back on.
Imagine watching the speed skating competition at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and looking a few seats over to see none other than Olympic medalist swimmer Michael Phelps.
This is exactly what happened to senior Megan Wiegmann while she was on vacation in Canada.
Phelps was sitting in a roped-off V.I.P. section, bodyguard-free, and was spectating the competition alongside other Olympic athletes.
Megan and her friend approached Phelps in hopes of getting an autograph. Megan went up and introduced herself and was surprised when Phelps introduced himself back.
“I was like, ‘Hi, I’m Megan,’ and he said, ‘Hi, I’m Michael Phelps.’ It was just funny because we already knew who he was,” said Megan.
After the introductions, Megan and her friend got pictures with the swimmer.
“He was really nice and friendly to us,” Megan recalls.
Megan has many fond memories from her time in Vancouver, but meeting Michael Phelps was one of the highlights of her trip.
While on vacation in Jordan, junior Jon Akkawi was riding along in a car with his uncle and brother when the car swerved abruptly in order to dodge a group of oncoming cars.
Jon’s uncle was making a quick left turn and veered in order to avoid an accident.
When they arrived at the museum, army officials got out of their cars and weren’t allowing people to enter. It was later discovered that the commotion was because Prince William and his wife Kate were on their way to Jordan’s royal wedding.
“We didn’t know it was Prince William and Kate until after we got to the museum,” said Jon, who was a little stunned after the near-crash with the British royal couple. “We were lucky because if my uncle didn’t watch out, we would’ve crashed right into them!”
Though it was a scary experience at the time, Jon now laughs about it and tells the story with a smile.
It was a dream come true when the day before his concert Shalini Nair called 94.9 hoping to win tickets for the iHeartRadio music festival. Instead, she ended up getting meet and greet tickets for Jay Sean.
Jay Sean came to 94.9 and gave an interview and then talked to her and the other pass winners. Finally he took photos with everyone and signed autographs.
Later, Shalini happened to see his tour bus was still parked and that there were a bunch of other fans waiting for him.
He tried to sneak out the other side of the bus and a ton of people started running towards him. Shalini ran too, and ended up being really close to him. There were so many fans pushing and shoving that she got shoved right into his path and almost fell, but Jay Sean caught her and then ran inside the car that was waiting to take him to dinner.
Right after he left she started crying out of happiness. Meeting Jay Sean was the best day of her life.
