Cal High students, rejoice! The times of turmoil are over after cheer and songleaders were informed this week that they can once again wear their uniforms at school.
The Californian reported last week that dress code would be enforced for all students, including members of the cheer and song teams whose skirts were too short. But after much discussion, the ban on the uniforms was lifted, administrators said.
Assistant Principal Duff Danilovich said the topic of the dress code was addressed at a recent meeting between Principal Mark Corti and other high school principals in the district.
“There must have been a phone call, an email or something (from a parent) wondering why Cal was going this route,” said Danilovich.
At the meeting, Corti and the other principals agreed to a districtwide dress code policy that would not include the ban on the cheer and song uniforms.
Members of both squads were ecstatic to hear that they would be allowed to wear their uniforms at school this week in time for homecoming.
“I think its cool that we can wear them again,” said senior songleader Stacey Magdefrau.
Stacey and other songleaders also said they felt it was wrong of administrators to enforce the dress code on the uniforms in the first place.
“It’s ridiculous that they took them away at the beginning,” said Stacey. “They get mad at us for not being school spirited, then they take away our uniforms.”
Senior Allie Bergman and other cheerleaders agree that the uniforms signify school spirit, and to take them away would be against tradition.
“I feel like everyone’s going to be more spirited (now),” said Allie.
On Oct. 22 there will another districtwide meeting where high schools will be further instructed about the dress code, Danilovich said.
