Like the Malcolm from the show “Malcolm in the Middle,” Cal’s Malcolm Trimnell is also a middle child. But that’s where the similarities end.
Senior Malcolm Trimnell has been a singer since he was five, and he first joined a youth choir when he was eight years old.
“When I was little I had to choose between sports and singing,” said Malcolm. “Even though I liked both, in the end I chose singing.”
Malcolm has studied numerous genres of music. He mostly enjoys singing opera, world music, rock and roll, soul, and some techno. He especially likes to sing uplifting music.
“It touches you more and you can see the beauty in it,” said Malcolm. “You can remember the moment longer.”
Malcolm’s biggest influences are Ralando Villazone, Michael Bolton, Celine Dion, Queen, and Beyonce. He said likes their music because they have good messages in them.
“I like singing songs that I feel passionate about,” said Malcolm. “Singing is all emotion.”
Last year Malcolm attended a school in Germany as a foreign exchange student. He decided to go there because he wanted to learn a new language and learn more about their culture because his father is German. His host family was very musically inclined and Malcolm became interested in German opera and joined an opera choir.
“He’s very dedicated to his work,” said senior Maridel Terciano, a friend of Malcolm’s.
Malcolm will be attending New England Conservatory in the fall. After college he hopes to start making music albums and possibly go back to Germany and audition as much as he can.
“I like listening to him sing,” said Eileen Mantz, the leadership teacher at Cal. “He is always willing to give his time and support his school.”
His life ambition is to have a successful music career and live comfortably.
“I want to do it all,” said Malcolm. “Being a singer is hard, but I want my music to be versatile.”
